The power of traditional search methods in comparison to other solutions, such as the extensive use of social media or advertising, is founded in its verbal method of candidate communication and the thoroughness of its approach. Executive Search involves a full and thorough market investigation at national, continental (Multi Country) or global level for specific types of candidates with certain types and depths of experience; whether they are actively looking for a new role or passively interested should the right opportunity be presented to them.

Following rigorous research and candidate identification, each prospective candidate is verbally approached, instantly qualified in terms of capability and expertise followed by being presented with an opportunity to make a career move. The nature and style of search allowing the recruiter to present their client and the role in the most attractive fashion whilst also answering and overcoming any questions or potential risks the candidate may ask at this, the all-important, first touch point with the candidate.

It is true to say that such a thorough solution is generally misconstrued as only being relevant for the most senior and often boardroom level of recruitment! The reasoning linked closely to the business critical nature of such roles, the thoroughness required to find the best, the perceived long timelines in order to achieve the goal and the high fees associated.

However this traditional thinking is changing and for various reasons. The foundation for these changes is a growing number of clients today are looking to continuously have a strong talent pipeline at various levels across the business. These ‘succession layers’ provide the leaders of tomorrow. It is certainly true that for roles in the more mid to senior ‘succession levels’ or those that are niche or private and confidential in nature have the same challenges, talent requirements, candidate market dynamics and thoroughness of solution requirements to those at the very top.

In terms of ‘shortlist timelines’ and associated fees, again the competitive landscape has moved on. In our view, you certainly can’t claim to be a specialist recruiter and search company unless you can deliver a shortlist within 4 weeks! With regard to fees, there are various models to choose from which are far more competitive than those traditionally associated with the solution.

At PartnerWise, our search process starts with a face-to-face client meeting and if possible, time spent within your business, meeting various leaders, gaining an understanding of the company, the brand and particularly the culture. Often finding candidates with the correct brand and culture fit is the hardest part of all. Over and above, during this time together we will discuss all aspects of the role, the challenge and the profile required in detail. We will share relevant experience, discuss solutions and tailor them specifically to your requirement. Once agreed, we will create the assignment brief that will act as part of the attraction pack that will be reviewed by each potentially interested candidate following initial approach. In our experience, more time invested initially is directly proportional to the speed to shortlist, the quality of the result and the overall customer experience.

Managed by your appointed Partner, our in-house researchers leave no candidate stone unturned in the pursuit of the best people for your business. The process is thorough and meticulous. Although we use every modern method of connection, we find the old traditional way of identification and a verbal approach, together with a compelling reason for a candidate to consider a move remains the only way to truly attract candidate profiles that are ‘exclusive’ to you and are generally found to be of a higher calibre.

All candidates are initially screened via Skype, then interviewed personally at a location of the candidate’s choice and assessed against tailored criteria. As a key part of adding value all candidates are ‘risk assessed’ and back referenced with balanced notes written and further investigation areas highlighted. Unlike many of our competitors, we are also happy to share along the route full details of our research in a candidate tracker format. This often provides insight around competitors, their structures, salary levels and perceptions of your employer brand and role in question.

In addition to the rigorous processes conducted, a significant element of talent acquisition requires sensitivity and personal consideration. It’s a balance of identifying, qualifying and attracting talent and also taking the time to carefully manage the emotional journey of the candidate, and often their partner, when they consider making a life-changing career decision. Recruitment often involves personal change of circumstances as you are attracting a candidate who will be highly regarded by the company they currently work for and particularly if other factors are involved such as relocation and re-schooling within a country or overseas. The process is complex and that’s before the fundamentals of package comparisons, tax levels and associated standards of living.

It is far from a transaction! Apart from finding the highest calibre candidate, all the emotions, risks, negotiations, speed of process and associated decision making on both sides have to be carefully managed right up to the day of joining and beyond.

    Although I am a believer in work/life balance and encourage my team to live such a value, personally I am never far from thinking about how we can do things better. When I do get chance, my interests as a passionate Welshman are rugby (any code!), golf and over the last 3 years distance running where I have completed numerous road races for our chosen charity across the UK.

Following graduating in languages at the University of York and an early career in retail and commercial radio, I went straight into search. That was in 2011 and I can safely say my feet have rarely touched the ground since.

    I specialise at the senior end of all Commercial and Operations disciplines across the fashion, denim, lifestyle, accessory and sports sub markets internationally. I travel frequently, have customers and have made placements all over the world and have been fortunate enough to build up vast knowledge of my space combined with global candidate connectivity.

    As my work is hectic in nature, I love to try (!) and relax a little in my spare time. I enjoy live music, cooking (and posting foodie pictures on Instagram, obviously!) and travelling. Having completed a number of distance runs on behalf of PartnerWise’s chosen charities, I can often be found leaving the office at night with a rucksack on my back, ready to run home and get some training in!

We are a diverse team consisting of those with industry and global recruiting experience within the sector, others direct from disciplines which they now recruit into, intermingled with those who have worked in-house. The latter providing a unique insight into the solutions, service level and customer experiences provided by many of the leading boutiques and global consulting firms. From such insight, we saw an opportunity to create a brand which would do things ‘infinitely better’.

Taken from client reaction, although there are certain ‘value added’ aspects of how we approach the task of delivering our customer’s best in class talent, our main point of difference is through our people. Their brand fit aligned to our customer culture, how we are structured and organised to strongly lever knowledge, expertise and candidate connectivity. All of which provides the foundation of delivering speed to shortlist and in solution terms, how we treat and tailor each unique challenge firmly with the customer completely in mind.

We see our role over and above finding, attracting and selecting the right profile of candidate as very much brand ambassadorial. Therefore in our view, the cultural fit of the recruiting partner with the brand and the candidates they meet is essential in the delivery of the most positive of candidate journeys and overall experience.
